What in the heck do these pictures mean, anyway? I'm no Dr. Love here, but US Weekly has posted some pretty darn convincing evidence of a supposed secret date. Ms. Simpson and Mr. Mayer met for an hour-long lunch November 12 at Paradise Cove Beach Cafe in Malibu, where Jess preferred double vodka cranberries over lunch fare. "When they got up, Jessica was rubbing his back. You could definitely tell they were on a date.” Aww, isn't that the sweetest thing? Another source adds: “It’s a flirtation. I wouldn’t call it full-on dating, but there is a fondness. He doesn’t like the attention, but he likes her. He wants to avoid the public scrutiny of last time.” The clincher for me? Mayer left a $40 tip on the $100 bill. You know a big tipper is just trying to impress a girl...Go John!!!

Gossip rags, beware! Jessica Simpson is now running the show. All by herself! Since firing publicist Rob Shuter last month after a PEOPLE cover screamed the star was head over heels in love with some guy named John Mayer, Simpson has taken it upon herself to call all those tabloids and open the lines of communication. Is this a way to repair her damaged relationship with the press, who pounces on anything Jess-related? Looks that way, at least according to what Simpson spilled to Jane magazine: "It's been very emotional. But I am my own publicist right now. I've called all the heads of the tabloids. I don't want anyone else to speak for me now," she said. Jess said it was hard to find forgiveness for those evil editors who hurt her, but she's a naturally forgiving person...must be the Southern Baptist in her. She also said she knows exactly who leaks all that false info and the person (or persons?) is definitely NOT a friend. "Trust me, if inside sources were my friends, the magazines would have a lot juicier info!" Now what does that mean, Jess? Are you hiding more skeletons in your closet? Sounds to me like you just opened up another can of worms with that last quote. But what do I know...you're the publicist now. All hail the Master! I hear the cover came from some of these shots...

Proud Papa Joe Gets Weirder

Papa Joe Simpson is at it again. In a bizarro scenario even for the Simpson  clan, the ever-present daddy has taken up a new hobby to further control how his girls, Jessica and Ashlee, are portrayed in the media. Armed with a camera and determination, he's inked a deal with WireImage to snap pics at high-profile events. Sources say they've seen him battle for shots of his daughters, then approving only his photos for distribution through WireImage."I thought it was really odd that he was always in my way, since I was the one who was paid to be there shooting," says one photog. Oh, and he's also provided the agency with exclusive and sometimes risque pics from family getaways. Is it just me, or is this whole thing just plain weird? I thought Papa was a bit too proud of his daughters, but this takes it to a whole new level of spookiness. And why in the heck is he so obsessed and protective of his girls, anyway? Give the girls some breathing room, Papa!! We'll all thank you!

Papa Joe Saves His Daughter

Papa Joe to the rescue! Apparently Jessica Simpson is so steamed about the media frenzy created by her supposed romance with singer John Mayer that she went straight to the source and had her daddy fire publicist Rob Shuter. The Simpson camp wasn't too happy with the way Shuter handled the budding relationship in the press. A PEOPLE cover last week proclaimed Jess was "in love," and an US Weekly cover dissected the love between the singers..this week the magazine has corrected itself with a picture of a decidedly sad Jess on the cover, the word DUMPED prominently displayed. The crazy story is "100 percent Shuter. He broke all the rules of the game. He's a pathological liar. I wonder how much Jessica even knew what he was up to," a source close to the stars told Radar magazine. Wow, this girl has certainly been through a lot in the last week. Sort of makes me feel almost lazy. Maybe I should have a secret affair and break it to the tabloids...
