90210: Are you a Kelly or a Donna?

One of the definitive, landmark shows of the 1990’s, Beverly Hills 90210 quickly became an important fixture in the popular discourse of adolescents and young adults. As you may remember, the first season’s main characters, Dylan, Kelly, Donna, Steve, David, Andrea and twins Brandon and Brenda all attended West Beverly Hills High School. Brandon and Brenda Walsh and their parents, transplants from Minneapolis were the stable nuclear family with strong values; their home was a safe haven for the whole gang and the center of much of the drama.  This 6-disc set features all 22 dramatic first season episodes filled with love triangles, personal crises and teen tragedy. Who can live without that!

SNL: You know you love it!

Back in 1975, seven young performers came together as the Not Ready for Prime Time Players and created a late-night comedy showcase that would become one of the most enduring and celebrated franchises in the history of television. In that first season comic geniuses John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Laraine Newman and Garrett Morris put their unforgettable stamp on television comedy and shocked viewers with their irreverent, smart and off-kilter humor. I know, it's hard to remember back then, and most of us bloggers were wee ones at the time, so why should you care? Because Saturday Night Live: Season One is coming to DVD in December. Need I say more?

 

Holy Thursday -- It's Happy Hour

Call it the new myspace. Networks like Fox are now offering full episodes of their new shows, online at Google video. I suppose this just means when our favorite shows are eventually cancelled, as they always are, we'll have a better library of them online. In the mean time, catch the new show Happy Hour on TV in "real time" Thursdays 8:30/7:30c, on FOX.

Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip starts tonight

Get ready to give up your social life — tonight is the official start of the new television season. While there are tons of new shows and even a new network, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, a product of West Wing and Sports Night’s Aaron Sorkin has the most buzz. The show offers a behind-the-scenes look at a late-night sketch comedy show in the vein of Saturday Night Live. It features mega stars like the newly preggers Amanda Peet, Matthew Perry and Bradley Witford. Tune in tonight on NBC at 10.

Get some champagne for this Supernova

Lukas Rossi, a 29-year-old punk rocker from Toronto, won the role of lead singer for the band Supernova on the CBS reality show Rock Star: Supernova on Wednesday. After closely beating out rival Dilana Robichaux, a transplanted South African now living in Houston, Rossi told People:

At the end of the day, it's about what the band needs and wants, and I would happily step aside if it was for the betterment of Supernova. But, they chose me, and it was a good choice, man, because I'm going to give it my all and I'm sure the boys in the band are going to do the same thing. We just want to write a bunch of great records and tour for the fans."

Nip/Tuck begins tonight at 10 on FX

Creator Ryan Murphy gives the FX drama a face-lift for its fourth season premiere (tonight at 10), slicing away the fat and revealing some surprising wrinkles in its lead characters. The homoerotic bond between longtime friends, business partners and occasional rivals Christian (Julian McMahon) and Sean (Dylan Walsh) is cut wide open.

Fantasia Barrino: Once in a Lifetime

Did anyone see Paula Abdul on the red carpet at the Emmy’s? Bless her heart, but she’s on the road to crazy town. Fortunately, the same cannot be said for the contestants on her show American Idol. On the heels of the reality show’s new season, former idol Fantasia Barrino proved that she has staying power!
On August 19th, Lifetime debuted its original network movie, The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life is Not a Fairytale. The movie is based on Fantasia’s life, including her struggles with illiteracy, rape and teenage pregnancy. According to Lifetime, more than 6.6 MILLION people watched the debut and more than 19 million tuned in over the course of the weekend. Those statistics made Fantasia’s story the second most-watched movie in Lifetime history.

We all know that more votes were cast for the Idols than in the last presidential race. If that number didn’t convince you of American Idol’s popularity, these numbers should. American Idol won’t be leaving the airwaves anytime soon, and apparently neither will Fantasia. Source
